The Lone boulder Ridge Block of our Wild Horse Peak Estate Vineyards is on an East facing slope in the shadow of Wild Horse Peak. At approximately 2,400 feet in elevation, the large granite boulder that is at the ridge top of this veinyard block is a remnant of some gargantuan ledge that fell from the precipitous heights of WIld Horse Peak a millennia ago. Its final resting place now marks the best block of Syrah in all of Southern California. Gravely soils, eroded from centuries of rains, are part of the alluvial strata that slope from Wild Horse Peak to Arroyo Seco Creek and are the heart of Lone Boulder Ridge. A mere ten acre block, we struggle each year alongside the vines to gather a scant ton and a half per acred.
This is the third vintage of Syrah to be released from our estate vineyards at Wild Horse Peak. Deep draughts of lavender and earthy fig aromas meld with the spicy oak in a wonderfully assertive bouquet that is full of brambly berries and Damson plums. Aged exclusively in French oak barrels, this wine has a harmonious and well developed vanilla schent that is very appealing and attractive. Deep purple-red in color, this wine is very alluring and rich. The tannins are silky, and a delicate crispness in the body shows the aging potential in this wine; suave, yet sporting a roguish roughness that is distinctly Wild Horse Peak.
