Rich berry fruit and spicy, peppery notes are backed up with delicate caramel and brown sugar notes. Aging in American oak added an elegant backbone of oak to the tannin structure, and the subtle wood tones are very appealing, melding with the fruit to give a warm, lush complexity. The mouth-feel and the balance of this Zinfandel has become seamless and harmonious.
Zinfandel is a variety that has become synonymous with California wine. After much debate, it was decided that a small block of Merlot at our Wild Horse Peak Mountain vineyards should be grafted to Zinfandel. Next was the discussion of which clone to use for the scion wood for grafting. It was decided that the St. Peter’s Church clone (of Cloverdale, CA) was to be selected. After all, this vineyard is one of the oldest Zinfandel vineyards in California, and its budwood has spawned numerous other vineyards throughout the state.
