In this modern age, Verdelho may be thought of as an obscure Portuguese variety, sporting a storied history; a grape with a funny name and no frame of reference. Well, this is all about to change. We planted 2.5 acres of this varietal in 2016 at our Temecula Springs Estate vineyard, because we felt Verdelho is something that everyone should get to know. At harvest, the fruit was hand picked and then the grapes were whole cluster pressed, and the juice was cold settled prior to inoculating with a Spanish yeast isolate and fermenting exclusively in stainless steel.
Verdelho is a refreshing and vibrant wine with a lean, crisp structure that packs a cornucopia of fruit character ranging from exotic guava, passion fruit and gooseberry characters to bright lemon and grapefruit nuances. This vintage is all stainless fermented and bottled while still fresh and young, it is a wine that has great fruit character and nuances. Thank you Verdelho, for not being Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. Thank you for being Verdelho! Cheers!
