Description
To say this wine has been 20 years in the making might be an understatement, but it definitely emphasizes the direction of viticulture and enology that we were conscientiously pursuing in 2001 when South Coast Winery started producing wines. The Temecula Valley has numerous producers, often with varying opinions on what the best suited varieties were for the region, but collectively we could all agree that those varieties which are indigenous to the warmer regions of Portugal, Spain, France and Italy were the grapes we should focus on as this valley grew into the wine region we have now become.  Over these past two decades, we have worked to bring Mourvèdre, Syrah, Grenache, Touriga Nacional and Tempranillo, Verdelho and Arneis into the vernacular of the consumer and make these wines a household staple.  The development of our estate vineyards has slowly given Temecula the identity of being a region that isn’t another Cabernet and Chardonnay appellation in California.

South Coast Winery made the decision to pursue the accreditation for becoming a recognized “Certified Sustainable” producer. Our 2018 vintage marks the first release of red wines that have met the standard and are now labeled with the sustainability logo. Coupled with the signatures of the vineyard staff and cellar workers, this wine is dedicated to all those who have devoted the past 20 years of their lives to establishing South Coast Winery and its reputation.

The 20th Anniversary blend is 49% Syrah, 22% Mourvèdre, 19% Grenache and 10% Petite Sirah. The goal of making a Rhône-style blend that would rival a Chateauneuf du Pape was a dream twenty years ago, and now it is a reality. The varietal make-up does not focus on any one varietal, yet each variety has a verse and chorus unto itself. Berry notes from Grenache and Syrah are matched with complex earthy notes of Mourvèdre and delicate herbal nuances of Petite Sirah. Everything works as a team to give the wine a core of strength and rich complexity: hints of lavender, blackberry and smoky vanilla are all present. Aged in French oak for 18 plus months, this wine has the best qualities that a Rhône blend can offer, and truly highlights the Temecula Valley. We hope you enjoy this wine and we all look forward to making the next 20 years even better.
